Lingual Orthodontics
Lingual Orthodontics is an innovative technique for straightening teeth where the brackets are attached to the inside of the teeth, instead of the outside. This technique began to develop in the USA and Japan in the seventies and is today common in Europe and the Far East.
The advantage of Lingual Orthodontics is that optimal esthetics is maintained during the entire treatment period. It is suitable for a range of orthodontic problems and has been eqally successful in both simple and complicated cases.
Duration of the treatment is no different with this technique than with the buccal (outside brackets) technique. Time depends mainly on the case presented. Some orthodontic problems can be more solved easily and quickly using lingual brackets. The only discomfort experienced occurs during the period of adjustment to the brackets lasting up to 10 days, during which slight disruption in pronunciation of "whistling" letters may be expected, discomfort of the tongue and difficulty in chewing. After this short period of adjustment most of these side effects disappear.
Lingual treatment is more expensive than regular orthodontic treatment, due to the high cost of equipment and laboratory preparation, individually executed for each patient.
In order for the treatment to be successful, the orthodontist is required to undergo special training and gain vast experience.
